You may be able to access a free package of support to help you improve your home, keep warm and save money on energy bills.

The 'Better Homes, Better Health' service aims to promote wellbeing and reduce incidents of ill health during winter. It starts with a phone consultation with a trained energy advisor.

Eligibility

Any vulnerable resident is eligible for the service.

The following groups are particularly important:

  • residents over the age of 65
  • low-income families with children under five years old
  • residents with long-term health conditions such as cardiovascular or respiratory illness

The service offers:

  • a home energy assessment, made up of:
    • a home survey to identify issues with heat loss, energy use and damp and mould
    • an assessment to identify the possibility of installing energy efficiency measures (such as loft cavity wall insulation and boiler upgrades)
    • an explanation of energy efficiency schemes and grants that can help you access these measures
  • advice on energy bills and energy-saving behaviour, such as:
    • helping you understand how you use energy
    • how to heat and power your home most effectively, to save money
    • guidance on how to maximise use of fuel discounts and where appropriate, provide assistance to:
      • claim through the Warm Homes Discount Scheme
      • sign up to your supplier's priority services register
      • check if you are eligible for any other benefits to assist you with energy bills
  • small, easy-to-install energy saving measures and or winter warmth packs (delivered to your home soon after the phone consultation)

Additional services

There may be an opportunity to direct you to more services during your phone consultation, depending on your circumstances.

These include (but are not limited to):

  • a handyperson service for help with small and low cost repairs around the home
  • help with eating well, moving more, stopping smoking or drinking less through 'One You Hounslow'
  • benefit checks and fuel debt advice through Citizens Advice Hounslow
  • a free fire safety check from the London Fire Brigade
