September is Recovery Month

ARC Hounslow are promoting recovery month to spread awareness about substance misuse and celebrating those who have successfully recovered or are working toward recovery.

They will host events throughout September to provide information on prevention, treatment and recovery.

Stories and testimony from those who have experience of recovery from addiction are also available to help spread the message that recovery from any addiction is possible.

Recovery stories

“I’m in and out of recovery for the last 25 years and stayed off for short times but always went back to it. Two months before I started RDP my key worker asked me if I was interested in joining the programme, but I was in active addiction so I was not able to go.

"Shortly after that, I was taken to hospital with a suspected heart attack, I was detoxed in hospital and it went well. At some point, I was approached by my keyworker George he asked me if I was up for IDP so I said I was ready.  I came along on the following Friday and started the next Monday, I’ve been coming now for the last seven weeks and have found it so much better than I thought.

"I feel so much better and more confident, I’ve been working on my triggers and my self-belief.  Coming here has given me structure in my life and I can only say it has helped me leaps and bounds.

"I am more confident now and I look forward to the rest of the time I I’ve had so much heart from Colin and all the staff.  I look forward to coming in every day. It’s seems I am more looking forward than looking back at my life and I’m looking to finish the programme at the end of September and then going on to do some courses I can’t thank them enough for all the help.”

“I have been working with ARC for a few years now and my experience has been great.

"I was not always optimistic about my recovery, however since starting the recovery day programme on 13th June that has changed. I have been sober for 16 weeks and that could not have been achieved without the tools, knowledge and skills learned at the Recovery Day Programme.

"My recovery journey has been difficult and at times I have felt like giving up. However with the lessons learned from Shiv, Sophie and Colin, I have pushed past these obstacles and remained on track to stay abstinent and I’m very glad I did. I have learned that recovery is a long journey and replacing old habits can be quite difficult at times but it is very much achievable if you put the time and effort in.

"Recovery for me is a life long commitment that does not finish after my ARC treatment – in fact this will be the start of my independent recovery – where I have to demonstrate my willpower and remember all that ARC and the RDP has taught me. I hope anyone starting a treatment programme receives the great service I have and I wish them all the best.”
