Volunteer Week 2024

Blog: Care

Belinda Jane Calen

I volunteer at West Middlesex Hospital, where I’m a Butterfly Volunteer which means I work with end-of-life patients, families and health professionals.

I really enjoy spending quality time with them. I supported via the Volunteer Hub and have access to training. West Middlesex Hospital has lots of volunteering opportunities (which I was not aware of until I became a volunteer). I would urge others to make contact and enquire because it’s rewarding, fun and educational.

Volunteering is a humbling experience and it’s nice to give back to the community and hopefully makes a difference to the patient, family and hospital. Plus, you meet new people and develop new skills.

I currently volunteer with Befriend (Hounslow) as a mental health befriender, supporting an individual that is socially isolated and has complex mental health needs to build their social skills, confidence, and mental wellbeing. I do this on a weekly basis, for one or two hours each week. I am using my volunteering allowance towards this.
