Other forms of low-carbon heating
District heating
The Council is investigating the possibility of installing district heating networks in parts of the borough, to supply low carbon heat through highly insulated pipes to homes and businesses in those areas. If such an opportunity becomes available in your area, homes and businesses are encouraged to connect to these schemes, which can be an efficient way to supply low carbon heat, replacing gas boilers in existing properties.
Biomass systems
These burn wood logs or chips to provide warmth either to a single room or to power central heating. Biomass qualifies as a renewable form of energy as the carbon released is equal to the amount of carbon which was absorbed by the wood, and which is then reabsorbed by new trees being grown in its place. However, given the carbon emitted from the process of processing and transporting the wood, and the particulate air pollution resulting from both the delivery and burning of wood, the Council objects to its use.
