Cycle parking & storage

Cycling is one of the best ways of reducing your personal carbon emissions, while also saving you money and improving your health and wellbeing.

Security can be an issue, so we recommend that cycles are safely stored and locked whilst left at home. If not stored inside your home, cycles should always be stored in a secure location such as an enclosed garden, be covered and out of sight where possible, and should always be locked whenever stored outside or in a separate building. It is essential to use a good lock.  There are a range of solutions which includes but is not limited to:

  • Secure garage or shed with access alongside any car parking
  • Dedicated, secure and covered external cycle storage
  • Sheffield Stand or bike anchor in a secure location
  • Vertical Mounted racks (only permitted for existing dwellings.  While these can be helpful where space is limited, please consider if this is suitable for the intended user, if not for your own use).

For residents who do not have space for secure cycle parking within their property, the council is increasing the number of on-street cycle hangars which can be utilised for a subsidised fee.  For more information, please visit the Council’s web page on cycle parking

What needs planning permission?

Planning permission is needed in front gardens for any permanent structure that would be large enough to house a bicycle. Modest-sized cycle racks would not need permission.

Though the Council proactively encourages cycle use, efforts should be made to ensure that the impact of any cycle storage unit on an area is minimised. Side and rear locations should first be considered before resorting to placing storage to the front of a property. The use of natural features such as green screening or a boundary wall could also be utilized to screen the shed.

If the property is sensitive (such as being a Listed Building or located in a conservation area) and / or the above measures are not taken, then an application is at risk of being refused.
