New to the Council

Welcome to Hounslow Council

Hounslow is London's international gateway, a bustling westerly portal where the world meets the capital. Its also home to one of the UK’s most diverse communities stretching across 23 square miles of London from Chiswick to Heathrow.

The area features a wonderful array of quiet suburbs, modern housing estates, key industrial centres and bustling cosmopolitan communities.

The borough has a reputation for working in partnership to meet the needs and aspirations of all its residents. We believe in celebrating diversity and building cohesion as we work towards our vision of one Hounslow.

A varied and multicultural borough

Hounslow is a multicultural community of communities. Around a third of the borough's 212,000 people (2001 census) come from the black and ethnic minority communities, and the council endeavours to ensure that its workforce, policies and approach to service delivery reflect that mix.

Indeed, the borough is strongly committed to equal opportunity with clear policies and equalities issues, and a comprehensive programme of staff training. A number of initiatives are aimed at improving opportunities for black and ethnic minorities, women, disabled people, older people and other sectors of the community.

An attractive place to live and work

Hounslow contains a number of long established towns and villages, each with its own sense of history and identity, these districts include Chiswick, Gunnersbury, Iselworth, Brentford, Heston, Feltham, Cranford, Hanworth, Bedfont and Hounslow itself. Good transport links allow easy access by tube, trains and buses to Heathrow airport, central London and surrounding areas.

The borough boasts some of the most beautiful parks and open spaces in London, with no fewer than five historic houses. There are also a number of other key attractions such as Waterman’s Arts Centre, the Paul Robeson Theatre, Western International Market and the Kew Bridge steam museum. The borough is also home to Brentford FC and the Hounslow Hockey Club.

Key worker schemes

Many key workers living and working in the borough can benefit from a number of housing schemes run by the borough. These include shared ownership and the intermediate rent initiatives. You can register for these initiatives, including homebuy, on the keyworker housing page.
