Candidate spending
There are limits on candidate spending at elections and controls on the sources of funding for that spending. After the election, candidates and their agents must account for the costs of campaigning and donations to the campaign in a spending return.
The spending limit is £740.00 plus 6p per elector in the ward being contested. For example, if there are 7,500 electors in a ward, the spending limit is: £740 + (7,500 x 0.06) = £1,190.
The number of electors that candidates will need to calculate the expenses limits is the total number of qualified electors on the local government register as at 1 March 2018. Please see table below for the number of electors in each ward in the borough on 1 March.

Spending limits for joint candidates
- You are a joint candidate if you stand in the same ward and:
- have the same election agent or
- use the same campaign rooms or
- publish joint material
Joint candidates have lower spending limits, as they are sharing some of the costs. You should calculate your spending limit as above, and then reduce it by
- 25% for 2 candidates. Eg. £1190 (as above) x 25/100 = £297.50. Takes this off the spending limit for a single candidate. E;g £1190 – £297.50 = £892.50
- 33% for 3 or more candidates. E.g £1190 (as above) x33 /100 = £392.70. Take this amount off the limit for a single candidate £1190 - £392.70 = £797.30
Please note: that the calculation of expenses limits is the responsibility of the candidate and/or agent.
