World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day 2023

Hounslow shines a spotlight on wellbeing for World Mental Health Day

Mental health is a universal right.

This is the message for everyone in Hounslow as the borough puts wellbeing at the top of the agenda for World Mental Health Day (Tuesday, 10 October).

Organised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness about mental health issues and encourage positive change for everyone’s benefit.

Hounslow Council and its health and wellbeing partners have been working to promote positive mental health in the borough and to signpost residents to where they can find support for any issues they are facing.

In the run-up to World Mental Health Day, the Council has encouraged people from across the borough to take online suicide awareness training from the Zero Suicide Alliance

The free, 20-minute long session helps people to identify the signs that someone may be feeling suicidal and offers guidance on how to have a conversation with someone you are concerned about.

So far, more than 360,000 people across London have taken the training.

People in Hounslow who have taken the training have been sending in their photos with the special I’ve taken the training poster. The photos have been turned into a special montage to celebrate World Mental Health Day.

There are several events taking place in Hounslow on World Mental Health Day, Tuesday, 10 October.

  • The Hounslow Wellbeing Network will be relaunching the service at The Arts Centre, on the first floor of Hounslow’s Treaty Centre between 9.30am and 3.30pm. There will be a host of activities and a chance to see what support is available. Everyone is welcome to attend.
  • Hounslow’s Wellbeing and Recovery College will be hosting an open day between 11am and 2pm. The event will provide information about the services provided by the college. It will be followed by a panel discussion on mental health between 2pm and 4pm.

Support for people in Hounslow who are finding it difficult to cope includes the Hounslow Safe Space Helpline - 020 3475 5185.

You can speak with a trained professional who will offer urgent mental health support.

The service can help people to:

  • Establish a personal support plan
  • Develop effective coping mechanisms
  • Signposting to other support services

Plenty of online support is also available through the Good Thinking website – which supports Londoners with information and guidance to look after their mental health.

Those looking for other training opportunities can visit the Thrive LDN website - which works across the city to ensure all Londoners have equal opportunities for good mental health and wellbeing. New for World Mental Health Day, you can subscribe to an eight-week trauma-informed training programme

Each week you’ll receive the training chapter-by-chapter direct into your inbox. This means spending around 30 minutes per week engaging with the training to be awarded gold level status, ‘Committed to Trauma Informed Practice’.
