On what basis will the council consider either removing or keeping the measures following the trial period?
The Streetspace measures introduced by the council are being done so via ‘experimental’ and ‘temporary’ traffic orders, in line with the Government’s statutory guidance - Traffic Management Act 2004: network management in response to COVID-19. This requires the trials to run for a minimum of six months alongside consultation and additional monitoring of the impact of the measures.
The following will be taken into consideration when reviewing the scheme;
- General compliance with national, regional and local transport and environmental policy
- Feedback from the community
- Reductions in traffic flow and/or speed on residential roads
- Any evidence of modal shift to walking and cycling
- Road safety implications, including collision data
- Environmental changes, including air quality implications
Having considered the above, if officers recommend that a measure be made permanent, a report will be produced for local councillors to review, prior to a decision by the council’s cabinet/lead member. The outcome of each trial will be communicated via the council’s website and through letters to the local community.
