Cashless parking
The basics
There are currently just over 4,800 parking spaces within the borough which accept cashless parking. They all accept the phone payment option, with payment being taken directly from your debit or credit card. This removes the need to carry change around with you and to display a ticket. To assist those motorists that do not have a mobile phone, there are approximately 140 PayPoint shops around the borough where you can pay for a parking session.
In some areas we allow people to park for free for a period before it becomes chargeable, however a parking session must still be obtained either via the mobile phone app or from a PayPoint shop. Where this arrangement is in place, more information will be available on local signage.
PayByPhone
The council’s cashless payment provider is PayByPhone, and you can register with them either via their app, their website or their automated line. The app is the most popular method with customers given that it is easy to use. You can opt to receive email or text reminders when your parking is about to expire, so you can extend your stay without returning to the vehicle.
More information on registering is available online here: PayByPhone website.
Parking on-street
Those who wish to park within one of our cashless parking bays must ensure that:
- maximum stays are adhered to (check local signs).
- the vehicle is parked wholly within the bay markings.
- the bay (or part therefore) has not been suspended (check for large yellow notices).
If using PayByPhone drivers must also ensure that they:
- park within a bay that accepts cashless parking (check local signs).
- use the correct location code (check local signs).
- make payment for the correct vehicle and length of time required.
What to do if you’ve made a mistake
If you make a mistake when using PayByPhone, you can stop a parking session within the first five minutes by simply sending a text message to 65565 with the word ‘FINISH’ from the registered mobile number.
This will cancel both the parking session and the payment. You will then be able to re-book the session with the correct information.
Contactless parking payment
We are trialling a new 6-month contactless payment method in 13 car parks and 7 park and shop locations, across Hounslow. Meaning a bank card, or phone banking app, can now be used to pay for parking at these locations.
Users can pay for parking in four easy steps:
- Select your preferred language
- Enter your vehicle registration number
- Select how long you want to park for
- Tap your card to pay
The terminals accommodate free on-street parking for Blue Badge holders, as well as 30 minutes’ free parking sessions at park and shop locations, and emissions-based charging.
The new contactless payment method will be digitally inclusive and provide an alternative to people who find other technologies, like parking apps, challenging. This new option is quick and easy to use, and available in 6 languages: English, Punjabi, Polish, Romanian, Urdu and Nepalese.
The 6-month trial will add card payments to the existing PayByPhone parking app, and in-person payments using cash or a card, at more than 200 PayPoint retailers across the borough.
The trial involves the following list of car parks and streets with contactless parking payment terminals:
