Community Led Schemes (CLS)

Brentford and Isleworth CLS

Within the Brentford and Isleworth areas, we have recently completed our first CLS scheme to close the footpath between Spring Grove Road and Spencer Road, and have developed proposals for three other schemes. HGV traffic movements are being reviewed on Jersey Road and Thornbury Road as well.  Although the delivery date is yet to be confirmed, it is our intention to mobilise these schemes and finalise our HGV review in 2022 / 23.

Syon Lane Local Safety Scheme:

In collaboration with Transport for London signals the zebra crossing was upgraded to a signal controlled (Pedex) crossing in August 2023. The conversion has helped to improve traffic flow on Syon Lane and improved accessibility for the visually impaired.

Layton Road/Brook Lane North Low Traffic Neighbourhood

Following representations from residents regarding vehicles using Layton Road and Brook Lane North to avoid the traffic signals at the Ealing Road / A4 junction, the council are proposed a no-entry restriction on Brook Lane North and to restrict traffic from exiting onto the Great West Road (A4) in November / December 2022, however this was no supported. A plan showing these proposals is copied below:

Wyke Estate School Street

In response to local traffic issues experienced from the drop off and pick up of Nishkam School and Bolder Academy pupils, we are proposing to implement two “School Street” access restriction schemes on Braybourne Drive; and on Stags Way, Crowntree Close and Wyke Close.

The proposals include restricting access to the aforementioned roads during school drop off and pick up times, which will be enforced through the use of CCTV cameras – see proposals below:

Consultation for the school street schemes will run from October 16th to November 13th 2023, with implementation due in early 2024 if supported and approved by ward Councillors

Isleworth Station Pedestrian and Cycle Access Improvements

LBH has been working closely with Southwestern Railway and Network Rail to improve access to Isleworth Station from St Johns Road. Proposals include:

  • Clearance of the vegetated area at the southwestern end of Isleworth Station's car park, adjacent to St John's Road
  • Construction of a new shared use footway to improve pedestrian and cycle access to and from the station
  • New drainage, lighting, street furniture and trees are also proposed for the works.

Implementation of the scheme is subject to Network Rail approvals, with construction planned to take place late 2023 / early 2024.

Twickenham Road / West Middlesex Hospital - Yellow Box Junction

To improve westbound traffic flow without compromising on accessibility for the emergences the yellow box junction was reconfigured in August 2023. The changes have been successful and provides greater capacity for vehicles travelling westbound and turning left out of the hospital.

The proposals for the Spencer Road footway are designed to improve pedestrian safety and prevent antisocial behaviour. These changes were delivered 30th September to 3rd October 2022. Residents were notified in advance of the works during a three stage noticing process were further engagement took place.

As outlined on the above map these measures include:

  • closure of the Spencer Road Footpath and foot bridge connecting to Spring Grove
  • enforcement of the closure using newly fitted gates
  • removal of existing lamp columns to prevent the closed area from becoming a place to congregate for antisocial behaviour.

Syon Lane – junction with Macfarlane Lane

A new signalised crossing on Syon Road at the junction with Macfarlane Lane.

(Click on the image to view in more detail)

As outlined on the above map these measures will deliver:

  • a new signalised crossing on Syon Road at the junction with Macfarlane Lane
  • a new advance warning signage for motorists to give them plenty of time to react
  • improved, safer access across Syon Lane for those walking and wheeling, helping to encourage more sustainable travel choices
  • a more direct and safer route for cyclists wishing to exit Syon Lane and join the cycle route on Macfarlane Lane.

As well as the above step free access at Augustus Close / The Ham in Brentford, traffic reduction in the Church Road and Brantwood Road / Cleveland Road areas of Isleworth, and cycle and pedestrian improvements London Road by Amhurst Gardens and Wood Lane are to be developed over the next two years.
