Chiswick High Road/Chiswick Park Junction: Widening of Gunnersbury Station Crossing and Signal Modernisation

In collaboration with Transport for London the traffic signals at the junction of Chiswick Business Park and Chiswick High Road will be upgraded in November 23. There are 19 signal aspects and 4 pedestrian crossings as shown on the signal layout drawing below:

The signals modernisation works include:

  • Replacement of all traffic signal equipment.
  • Upgrade of TfL’s drawpits (chambers) and ducting
  • A new traffic signal controller and power supply
  • Changes to traffic signal timings, to comply with current national standards and TfL guidance
  • The addition of countdown units, so pedestrians are informed of the remaining time to cross the road

All signals design and construction are being paid for by TfL.

Works are agreed to widen the existing north-south crossing on the western side of the junction, on Chiswick High Road. This crossing is directly outside Gunnersbury Station and forms part of the desire line between the station and the business park. There is a long-standing overcrowding issue at this crossing, exacerbated by pedestrian guard-rail on both sides of the road and in the central reservation. The overcrowding issue has been raised by the West Chiswick & Gunnersbury Society.

The crossing will be widened by removing pedestrian guard-rail panels and breaking out part of the central reservation and extending the tactile paving. The existing crossing is 3.2m wide and the widened crossing will be 5.2m - an increase in capacity of 63%.

The widening of the crossing will be carried out in tandem with the signal modernisation works. This allows for significant time and cost minimising disruption to all users. These are major works are expected to take 4-6 weeks to complete. Some works will be carried out at night to minimise disruption.

Edensor Road / Promenade Approach Access Improvements

In partnership with Duke Meadows Trust, The access to Promenade Approach from Edensor Road was upgraded in March 2023. The works involved construction of a new continuous footway across the access, providing pedestrian priority by Cavendish Primary School. The Blacksmith Shop fabricated and installed new tracks for the gates collaborating closely with the highway contractors to ensure the best possible finish. Localised footway improvements up to and including Meadow’s Place was also delivered as part of the works.

Power Road Pedestrian Improvements

Pedestrian improvements at the access to 114 Power Road were complete in September 2023 and included the construction of a new domestic crossover, which removed the obstructive kerb upstands either side of the access. This has improved the pedestrian environment, particularly accessibility for those with mobility issues, impaired visibility and the elderly.

Strand on the Green Cycle Parking

In response to high volumes of people cycling to the Gtech Community Stadium, particularly on match days, proposals have been developed to increase the number of cycle parking stands available on Strand on the Green. Implementation of proposals is subject to consultation, which is planned to be carried out later 2023 / early 2024.
