Caldicott Guardian

At the London Borough of Hounslow, the quality and safety of your care records are our highest priorities.

What is a Caldicott Guardian?

Since 2002, all NHS organisations and Local Authorities which provide?social services?must have a Caldicott Guardian.

A Caldicott Guardian is a senior person responsible for protecting the confidentiality of your health and care records and making sure it is used properly.

The Caldicott Guardian ensures that the Council upholds the Caldicott Principles (which apply specifically to patient-identifiable data) and is supported by the UK Caldicott Guardian Council.

The Guardian plays a key role in ensuring that the Council and our partner organisations satisfy the highest practical standard for handling your personal information.

What are the Caldicott Principles?

Below are the eight principles to ensure your information is kept confidential and is used appropriately.

  • Justify the purpose(s) for using confidential information.
  • Use confidential information only when it is necessary.
  • Use the minimum necessary confidential information.
  • Access to confidential information should be on a strict need-to-know basis.
  • Everyone with access to confidential information should be aware of their responsibilities.
  • Comply with the law.
  • The duty to share information for individual care is as important as the duty to protect patient confidentiality.
