People walking to and from Feltham Railway Station are now on the right track thanks to a project to bring a popular footway back to its best.
The path next to the railway line, between Orchard Road and Hanover Avenue in Feltham, had been overgrown with weeds, blighted by litter and without street lighting., making it inaccessible for many users.
Local Councillor Alan Mitchell and his ward colleagues along with community members started a campaign to get it cleared,
Hounslow Council responded by drawing up a plan of action to bring this popular pedestrian passageway back to peak condition.
In recent months, work has been taking place to remove the overgrown shrubs and weeds and to clear litter from the site. A new footpath has been laid and the area has been enhanced with streetlights and mobility ramps on Orchard Road.
The new path is already proving a big hit with the locals. It was officially opened on Thursday, 11 July, by Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Transport, Cllr Katherine Dunne along with Cllr Mitchell, ward colleague Cllr Madeeha Asim and other invited guests.
Noveen Phillips, who lives locally and started the conversation about fixing up the railway path some years ago, said: "It's actually safe to go down at night now because of the lighting. I'm partly in a wheelchair nowadays and you couldn't ever have considered a pushchair or a wheelchair down here; both are easy now, so it's a fantastic shortcut for local residents, it's absolutely brilliant, we love it. We really appreciate Cllr Alan Mitchell’s work on this and the people at the Council who've enabled it, it's fantastic."
Cllr Katherine Dunne, Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Transport, said: “I’m delighted to be celebrating the re-launch of this railway path. The value of accessible, well-lit pathways will be appreciated by everyone who walks, uses a wheelchair or mobility aid, or cycles.
“I’m glad to hear that local people have been making excellent use of their new path and hope it’s enabling them to access all the great shops and services on Feltham High Street.”
