Its time to get the show on the road. Hounslow Council invites everyone to leave the car at home and enjoy a day full of healthy, green travel-related fun.

On Sunday, 22 September, the Council and its partners will celebrate Car Free Day. This global event promotes sustainable transport and healthier living.

This year, the event will be taking over Hounslow High Street between 1pm and 4pm.

Visitors to the event will be able to find out more about how the Council and its partners are encouraging more people to look at healthy, active alternatives to the car.

An important part of the event will be the focus on the fact that the boroughs streets and roads are there for everyone to use and enjoy.

By closing this section of High Street between Douglas Road and School Road/Laurence Road to traffic for the event, the organisers will show how streets and roads can become vibrant spaces for a whole host of activities including cycling, walking and socialising.

Some of the attractions on the day include:

  • Dr Bike cycle repair
  • Street yoga sessions
  • Walking tours
  • Smoothie bikes
  • E-bike training

Hounslow Council E-bike partner Lime will be offering visitors free one-hour bike hire passes as part the event.

Hounslow Councils Health Outreach Team will be on hand to give everyone information about how to stay fit and healthy in Hounslow.

The boroughs very own cycling group Cycle Sisters will be leading a guided ride around the town centre.

Hounslow Council has launched several initiatives to encourage residents to consider active transport and get more from their streets.

These include the opportunity for residents to apply for Play Streets to make their streets safe for children all year round. The council is also promoting an E-bike rental scheme to make cycling accessible to everyone.

Cllr Katherine Dunne, Hounslow Councils Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment, and Transport Strategy said: Car Free Day is a fantastic opportunity for us to reimagine our streets and experience how small changes in travel behaviour can improve our health and wellbeing. Whether its cycling with friends, walking to the park, or simply enjoying the streets free of traffic, we encourage everyone to take part in this celebration."

Hounslows Car Free Day is free for everyone to attend. You can register for a free place here.
