Hounslow Council has a wheely great event planned for fans of two-wheeled travel as we invite residents to come and ride the route of the newly opened stretch of Cycleway 9.

On Friday, 20 September, the Council will offer everyone the chance to hit the road and enjoy a guided ride of the new route between Watermans Park and Alexandra Road in Brentford.

The Council, Hounslow Highways and Transport for London have worked together to produce the nearly one-kilometre-long path - designed to enable bikers, walkers and wheelers to travel safely.

This latest section of Cycleway 9 was officially opened by Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment and Transport Cllr Katherine Dunne last month.

Features of the route include:

Protected cycle lanes on both sides of the high street.

  • Two new pedestrian crossings on High Street, near Alexandra Road and Pottery Road.
  • High-quality pavement surfaces for pedestrians.
  • Upgrades to four existing pedestrian crossings at Ferry Lane, Ealing Road, North Road and Holland Gardens.

Redesign of side roads and junctions to make them safer for people walking and cycling.

The latest celebration event runs from 3pm to 5pm on Friday, 20 September at Watermans Park.

There will be activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy, including games, safety briefing sessions and tips to help you feel more comfortable when cycling through Hounslow.

Cycling social enterprise Bikeworks will be leading guided rides along the new route during the event, which will be run throughout the celebration event.

Hounslow’s E-bike hire partner Lime, will be on hand to provide information about electric bikes and give visitors the chance to try them out.

The Cycleway celebration event heralds the start of a weekend of active travel action. On Sunday, 22 September, the Council and its partners will be taking over a section of Hounslow High Street between 1pm and 4pm to celebrate Car Free Day

Cllr Katherine Dunne said: In Hounslow, we are committed to making it as easy and safe as possible for people to cycle, walk and use other alternatives to the car. We are really proud of what has been achieved through Cycleway 9. The new route is already proving popular with people travelling for work, health or leisure, which is fantastic news.

If you haven’t seen the new route yet, or even if you have, please come to our event and join in the fun.”
