Hounslow Council has launched an exploration into space.

But this is no mission to Mars, it’s a project to determine how we shape the future design of the public spaces across the borough that we all use and enjoy.

The consultation, called Transforming Hounslows Public Spaces aims to create a design guide that will influence the future design of public spaces. It is now open for anyone who lives, works or studies in Hounslow to get involved, have their say and make a difference.

Public spaces are at the heart of the community and offer opportunities for leisure, socialising and local events.

They are important in helping to create a sense of community and can have a positive effect on people’s health and wellbeing.

Examples of public open spaces include high streets, public squares and  the entrances to buildings such as train stations, parks, faith buildings and schools.

Good public realm design has a significant impact on the economic life of urban centres, with the presence of public squares and greenery attracting inward investment and boosting local economies. In addition, good design of public spaces allows us to move freely between places, enhancing walking and cycling consequently improving our health and well-being.

The Council wants to transform these spaces for the future to ensure that they create a sense of belonging, offer inclusive access, promote active lifestyles, positive physical and mental health, social interaction and cultural integration and support a vibrant economy.

The Transforming Hounslow’s Public Spaces consultation covers a range of topics, including:

  • Street design - What changes can we make to ensure our streets are more pedestrian-friendly?
  • Accessibility - how can we make sure our public spaces are accessible to everyone?
  • Sustainability: What measures should we take to make our public spaces more sustainable and environmentally friendly?

Cllr Tom Bruce, Hounslow Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, Regeneration and Development, said: This is an opportunity for residents, businesses, and community groups to have their say about how our public spaces can be developed and improved, to make sure that they meet the needs of our residents.

This consultation is an important step in ensuring that everyone has a say in the future of our borough. We look forward to hearing your ideas and working together to create spaces we can all be proud of.”

Please take a few minutes to complete our online survey before Monday, 30 September.
