The programme, which is fully funded by the council and delivered by Bikeworks, is for young people aged 16 to 25, and women of all ages who live in Hounslow, are interested in a cycling career and want to take the next step by training to be a cycle mechanic.

Participants will receive hands-on training, a City and Guilds Level 2 qualification, and – on successful completion of the course – a toolkit to kick-start their career; all of which will equip them with the knowledge, skills, and experience to work in a professional cycle repair shop, run community Dr Bike sessions, or set up an independent bike mechanic shop.

Applicants need to be willing to commit to a ten-day programme in February or March 2025, from 9am to 5pm, and travel to the Bikeworks West Training Hub in Notting Hill (W10 6NQ).

Councillor Katherine Dunne, Lead Member for Climate, Environment and Transport Strategy at Hounslow Council, said:

“A key priority for the council is to support residents into decent, well-paid jobs. Green Skills are amongst the most in-demand skills in the job market, and this is a fantastic opportunity for women and young people that love bikes and working with their hands to develop the skills they need to get into a green career. If you are interested in pursuing a career in cycling mechanics or consider it as a potential career path, I encourage you to apply today.”

Other green opportunities

Hounslow Council is also offering people who are currently not in work the opportunity to get essential green skills to gain entry level roles, such as a Grounds Maintenance Operative.

The Green Skills Bootcamp, funded through the Mayor of London’s Skills Bootcamp for Londoners programme, is a free 4-week training course where participants will learn the foundations of maintaining green spaces through classroom theory learning, hands-on work experience with a local employer, employability training to help get them ‘job ready’, and – on completion of the course – will be offered a guaranteed interview with employers who are looking to hire new talent.
