Hounslow is one of seven White Ribbon accredited London councils and stands with organisations and individuals all over the world, in encouraging men to show their commitment to ending violence against women and girls in line with this year’s White Ribbon Day theme: It Starts With Men.
Cross-party councillors and the Mayor of Hounslow, stood together at Borough Council, 26 November, to acknowledge the White Ribbon campaign and support 16 Days of Activism. This international, annual campaign highlights and opposes gender-based violence and launched on Monday 25 November, running up to Human Rights Day, Wednesday 10 December.
This year, the Leader of the Council, Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, awarded the title of White Ribbon Champion to ten nominated men from Hounslow Council and Lampton Group, who are committed to the message, It Starts With Men. The Champions will actively engage in conversations to promote safety and equality.
Cllr Shantanu Rajawat, Lead of Hounslow Council said “This year's White Ribbon Day theme, “It Starts with Men,” serves as a powerful reminder that the journey to ending violence begins with us, men.
“Each of us has the capacity to be part of the solution, to challenge harmful attitudes, and to promote respect and equality. It is our responsibility to stand up against violence in all its forms and to support those who have been affected.”
Councillor Raghwinder Siddhu, Cabinet Member for Public Services and Enforcement, said “I’m proud to be one of the ten White Ribbon Champions and will use my voice to promote safety and equality for women.
“Hounslow has a longstanding commitment to tackling violence against women and girls and this campaign aligns with our ambition to make Hounslow safer.”
